Interests & Hobbies
I am the sort of person who collects hobbies. I pick up at least one new one every 5 months or so, and cycle around all my other hobbies every year or season or so, depending on what speaks to me. As a result, it's impossible for me to put all my interests and hobbies on here, but here are a few!
I've loved art since I was a kid! I consider myself an artist as an adult. I’ve studied fine art and design, and I’ve done a lot of work both traditionally and digitally. My two favorite sub fields are illustration, and the history of art. I love to track the changes that take place between decades and centuries and eras and the ways that art is changing in the present day.
| BLICK Art Supplies |
This is the art supply store that is beloved by artists and snobs alike, and for good reason! If you’re looking for quality supplies for traditional art, this is the place. |
| Cara |
Cara is a website by artists for artists that I have heard some buzz about but haven't personally checked out yet. The online artist community is difficult to fully track down these days, but this is a solid place to start looking without combing social media or wading through AI results. |
| MET Open Access |
The MET's database of their collection and public domain images. You can learn a lot without having to go out to the museum in person (Though I seriously DO recommend the MET!) |
Games & Design/Development |
I've always loved games both analog and digital. Board games, puzzles, TTRPGs, CRPGs, co-op games, etc. I have a hobby of running various types of games via forums (often original games or heavy modifications of the party game Mafia (also known as Werewolf in some variations)), and acting as game master in tabletop role-playing games I run for friends. I also have made a few attempts at developing video games, but it's something I've had limited success with so far.
| Mafia Universe |
I got into game design stuff from forum mafia, and this is an active forum that runs tornaments between different communities. |
| Game Maker |
A 2D video game engine you can work with for free or for a one time developer license to sell your games commercially, designed to be easy to use but powerful |
| Itch.io |
A site to share and sell small games by small (usually solo) developers. If you're looking for weird and unique games, look here! |
Astronomy is an interest of mine that is rarely passionate all year round, but that I always come back to. I've gone to conventions, met real astronauts, and helped my dad to do astrophotography, something I would like to get into myself someday. I really enjoy going out stargazing and wish I could go more often! I'm not a space expert or anything, but it's something I have a fondness for.
| NASA |
NASA's official website, where you can find information on current and upcoming missions and other info. |
| NASA Image and Video Gallery |
NASA makes their many photos and videos available here, most of which are released via an open use copyright |
| Cherry Springs State Park |
This is the best star gazing area in PA, with some of the lowest levels of light pollution in the north east. This park caters to campers with an interest in astrophotography and is a gorgeous campground too. Don't forget your red flashlights! |
A few years ago I became obsessed with trying to learn how to sew and make my own clothes… but I decided it was too hard and decided to take CIS145 instead! I'm still hoping to get started, and planning to try quilting which I've become especially interested in. Both fortunately and unfortunately, I've found this to be a very offline sort of hobby, but here are a few links I've found:
| Olta's Quilts |
An interesting Ukrainian Quilter I watch on YouTube who has both tutorials and videos of quilt exhibits that are local to her |
| History of Crazy Quilts |
Information on Crazy Quilts, which were a trend in the Victorian era for using up scraps of fabric. They’re still popular now! I really want to give it a try! |
| Quilt Index |
A large open access collection and database of images and information about quilts run by the humanities department at Michigan State University |
