New Perspectives: The Internet 10e Comprehensive
Chapter 5
I actually really liked module 5! I feel like this covered more topics I am interested in and gave me some new knowledge about it that I probably wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. I've been using the internet for most of my life but i never heard content being described under the push and pull model before. It makes a lot of sense and it's something I'll keep in mind more in the future.
I also never heard the term “mashup site” before. I'm not entirely sure i fully understand what this means just from the chapter though. I do wish that section had a few examples of this kind of site, but since it was included in the section about APIs, I have some guesses.
I am somewhat familiar with APIs and what they do, though i have never worked with one before, so this made me think of a site like geoguessr, which uses the Google maps API to create a game where you are placed in a random location on Google maps street view with the identifying google overlay removed, and you have to guess where you are in the world. You are scored by accuracy. I used to play this all the time, but unfortunately Google started charging for use of this API, and the site shut down its free play option and switched to a subscription-only model.
Other parts of the module I found really informative were the parts about podcasts and the process of their invention. I had not considered that they were started all the way back in 2004. That said, I thought it was odd that the chapter didn't seem to mention the place of the ipod in the history of the podcast. While podcasts predate the integration of podcasting features to the iPod, the “pod” in “podcasting” comes from there. I suppose the book didn't want to muddy the waters by singling out one specific type of mp3 player, but I still found it odd.
I also know that a lot of podcasts were made to work with RSS feeds, so I expected that connection to be mentioned more, because that's one of the only things I knew about RSS before reading this module. I found that section really interesting because I never used RSS and didn't really understand its use until now. I'm a bit disappointed its integration with different sites is degrading because I think I would like to try it out at some point.
All in all, this is my favorite module so far. I felt like I got a lot out of it and it gave me some new ideas to look into. Maybe i will see if i can get an RSS Feed or work with an API in the future.
